Over 280 Private Backcountry Sites Await!
It's hard to beat Yellowstone's backcountry campsite system. Within the park's boundaries there are over 280 developed backcountry sites that can be accessed by well marked trails. These sites include improvements such as fire rings, food hanging poles, leveled tent areas, and even pit toilets. They are located near water sources, and far from any other sites. You and your camp companions will enjoy a private experience, far from any other camping groups and the hustle and bustle of civilization. These sites are often located near the banks of beautiful lakes or rivers, and some offer breathtaking mountain views.
You must reserve one of these backcountry sites before an overnight stay, but the process is quick and convenient. All major locations in the Park (where employees work and live) contain a National Park Service Backcountry Office. Simply go to this office, and talk over your plans with a NPS Backcountry Ranger. They will assist you in selecting a site, and after filling out a form, you will be given a backcountry permit for the site. If you reserve within 2 days of your planned overnight, it's all for free! A small fee is charged for reservations in advance of 2 days.
Upon your first visit to the backcountry office to make a reservation, you must watch a video that will familiarize you with bear safety and proper backcountry use. You will also be required to pass a test on these issues. This process may take over a half an hour.
If you intend to use backcountry sites often, we highly recommend attending a Frequent Backcountry User Seminar. These are offered by NPS backcountry rangers. Attendees will learn how to enjoy bear country safely, backcountry use ethics, and the unique rules that apply to backcountry recreation in Yellowstone. Those who complete the course will be given a "Frequent User Card" that allows instant, hassle free access to backcountry site reservation through their NPS Backcountry Office. These courses will be scheduled in response to interest. Ask your location Employee Recreation Staff for more information.
